This study focuses on the work of two great German architects, Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe. A century separates the work of these two men. They share the characteristic of having developed works that relate together to Classicism and picturesque.
For Schinkel, the Gartnerhaus, a picturesque masterpiece, would oppose the Bauakademie, classic in essence. Likewise, Mies' Barcelona Pavilion would be poles apart from Chicago's Crown Hall. Our research attempts to overcome these prejudices to better understand how Classicism and picturesque coexist in works that are both eclectic and coherent.
The corpus on which we rely consists of buildings selected for their relevance to the subject that interests us. We distinguish two categories of building: those located in a natural or suburban context, and those located in an urban context.
By studying these projects from the angles of Classicism and the picturesque we want to ask the following question: Can architecture be both rational and irregular, autonomous and integrated?
